Kids Love Jewish Holiday Crafts

Children's Bookshelf

This make-it-yourself book focuses on 12 Jewish holidays and Shabbat. The crafts it suggests include items that can be used by the child - such as candle holders, a kippa, and finger puppets - as well as decorative objects.

The organization and presentation are excellent. Instructions begin with a list of necessary items. These are primarily inexpensive and easy-to-find household objects. There is a clear and simple step-by-step description of how to make each craft. At the back of the book, there is a section of patterns that can be traced.

The crafts include placemats for Rosh Hashanah, a windsock for Succot, Hanukkah magnets, a pinecone bird feeder for Tu B'Shvat, a shalach manot basket for Purim, a matza cover for Passover, a memorial light for Yom HaShoah, and a havdallah spice box. Because of its careful organization and simplicity, older children will be able to make the crafts on their own and guide younger children.
