Saying Goodbye to Grandma

Saying Goodbye to Grandpa

Life Cycle Books For Young Readers

Death is never an easy concept for adults so when it comes to explaining it to children, it becomes all the more complicated unless it is in the pen of a former American who live in Israel like Dr. Spero. An associate professor of the school of social work at Bar-llan University and a senior clinical psychologist at Ezrat Nachim Psychiatric Hospital, Spero presents two honest books for young children who have experienced the loss of a grandparent. They can be read to a child or by a child, but he recommends using the book as a catalyst to help the child explore his feelings.

The introductory material explains to parents and educators how best to use the book and offers guidelines.

The format of the books is the same. Grandma in one book and Grandpa in the other are vibrant, active, important parts of the life of the child. One day the child comes home to find a parent crying and is told the grandparent has died. The book then continues with how the child is told, the funeral and the shiva. A glossary and recommended books for parents are at the end of each book.

These are resources to keep in mind should the need arise.
