Ganz, Yaffa

Yaffa Ganz is the well known author of forty Jewish, juvenile books, and of two books of essays for adult readers. Over the past twenty years she has published hundreds of articles and stories in Jewish publications and has written for large Jewish websites. She has a bi-weekly column in an international Jewish newspaper. Author of the by-now classic "Savta Simcha" series and the all time favorite "Mimmy-Simmy" books, her name has become a household word in Jewish communities across the globe, synonomous with quality, contemporary literature for Jewish children.

Ms. Ganz has given seminars, lectures, participated at international book conferences and made appearances at schools, books fairs and Jewish communities in the U.S., Canada and Israel. Her books have been translated into French, German, Hebrew and Spanish. Over half a million books have been sold worldwide, comprising a large section of today's Jewish juvenile bookshelf.

Ganz's interests are highly eclectic. They include story and picture books for younger children and books full of user-friendly information covering a wide spectrum of topics: the human body, the world of animals, geography, the Jewish calendar, holiday books, rhymes, riddles, a basic Jewish reference book for young readers and a two-volume history book written especially for teens – the only one of its kind in existence. Her presentation and subject matter is always based on traditional Jewish values, infused with humor, charm and a wonderful facility with the English language. Equally at home in all sections of the Jewish community, Yaffa Ganz books are to be found in Jewish homes, libraries and schools of all denominations. A large and faithful following of readers sends her an unending stream of fan mail (she responds to each and every piece she receives) and seeks her out on their visits to Jerusalem.

In 1990, Ms. Ganz was awarded the presitigious Sydney Taylor "Body of Work" Book Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries for the "totality of her work and her outstanding contribution to the field of Jewish Literature for children." (The previous recipient was author Eli Weisel.)

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Ganz and her husband moved to Israel in 1964 where they raised their five children. In 1980 she became the founding editor of the Young Readers Division at a large Jewish publishing house Feldheim Publishers in Jerusalem. She served as editor for ten years.

Today the grandmother of a growing clan, Ms. Ganz feels great empathy with her young readers and considers herself "thoroughly young at heart," which is perhaps the reason why her books have entered the hearts of so many young readers around the world. Originally two separate books, The Adventures of Jeremy Levi and Hello Heddy Levi told the story of eleven year old Jeremy and his younger sister Heddy. Funny, endearing and replete with a wealth of traditional values, Jeremy and Heddy became all-time favorites with young readers. For the past five years, after having gone through ten printings, the books were out of print. The new Pitspopony edition brings the beloved brother-sister team back in one volume,The Adventures of Jeremy and Heddy Levi, with completely new illustrations.
